THE DANCE OF THE WATER NYMPHS
Once a year, the academy celebrates a festival called “The Dance of the Water Nymphs”.
This is a phenomenon that happens every 2nd week of November. This festival starts at dusk till dawn and is a holiday for everyone in the academy.
The river starts to glow at dusk and the water nymphs start to come out in human form and play. The nymphs don’t speak or communicate verbally with humans. They only sing songs of praise to the goddess of the night who brought them to life. They return to the river at dawn.
It was said that the Goddess Akari officially celebrated this day to commemorate Kagami’s beauty and life. The school’s founders made sure that this festival is part of the Kawaakari Academy tradition.
KOUKI-SAN
KOUKI MOUNTAIN RANGE
Mt. Kouki is a mountain that covers most of the horizon southwest of the academy. It is a mountain with a really harsh and rough terrain that makes it difficult to navigate through at any time of the day. There is little to no vegetation at Mt. Kouki.
There is something about this mountain that makes people come back every time despite its ominous history. Some blacksmiths and alchemists attempt to go to Mt. Kouki and try their luck in harvesting materials for their weapons, armor, and potions.
If you’re lucky, there are multiple things you can harvest within this harsh terrain, each with their own attributes, and these are the following:
Dragon Scales
This is the most important material that people seek when they go to Mt. Kouki. Dragon scales are said to be unbreakable and are used for forging weapons and armor. Its popularity amongst blacksmiths is due to its low density and toughness. Although, forging one piece can cost you a fortune for the only material that can cut through dragon scales is a metal called “Athanarium”.
Athanarium is a very rare metal that can be found in the crystal cave where Otohime resides.
Dragon Blood
This is one of the ingredients alchemists seek at Mt. Kouki to create potions that can give enhanced physical strength one ingested.
Dragon Tears
This ingredient is used to create potions that can give enhanced reflexes as if time has slowed down for the one who ingested it.
Although people that don’t know much about Mt. Kouki may think that it’s easy to obtain all of these materials, this is where they’ve made a mistake. People that go into Mt. Kouki most likely never get to return.
It was said that the mountain’s landscape shifts around and if try to go back to where you came from, you’d find yourself in an area you’ve never been to before. It’s an endless maze of rocks, cliffs, pitfalls, and dead ends.
And not only that, there is a mountain spirit that you might encounter while roaming around Mt. Kouki.
He doesn’t have a name but according to those who have successfully escaped this terrain, he is a playful yet chaotic spirit that can take any form and you can never trust. He will lead you deeper into the mountain to the point of no return.
But, there are two ways to actually get out of the forest.
On a clear night sky, you may navigate your way by following the stars as a usual thing you’d do when you’re lost even at sea. But it’s not always that the sky is clear, the atmosphere around Mt. Kouki is usually hazy and cloudy and it’s impossible to see the night sky.
The second option is to find the spirit that resides there and give him an offering. The offering he would accept is never constant and depends on his whims but it was said that he was attracted to crystals and things that reflect light. Although, it still depends on him if he’ll like it or not.
People that are unfortunate and get lost in Mt. Kouki, remain there until they die.
