Intermediate Tier Classes

2 points each ✖️ 3 challenges maximum = SIX (6) possible bonus points

Challenges are split into 4 distinct attributes
STR (Vocal) | DEX (Mix) | INT (Art) | MAG (Animation)

Strength

  1. Divine Blessing

    • Include a 5 part Harmony within your entry
    • Duration must be at least 15 seconds long consecutively

  2. Muscle Medleys

    • Insert/Overlap the melody of another song somewhere in your entry

    • Mashup-style or during an instrumental break (intro/bridge/outro/etc)

    • Must be at least 15 seconds long to count for points

    • The timestamp of this melody section in your entry must be submitted with the rest of your entry form, as well as a link to the original song the melody is from and the timestamp of the melody used

  3. Starlit Incantatio

    • Include a made up language within your entry

    • Duration must be at least 10-15 seconds.

    • You can use made up languages that already exist (ex. Nier Chaos Language) or you can create your own. (This does not mean the use of a language that exist for daily communication; english, german, korean, etc etc)

    • We MUST see the translations on your script upon submission of your entry in an order: Original Song Language → English Translation → Made Up Language (i.e. Japanese → English → Nier Chaos Language)

Dexterity

  1. Deus Ex Nihilo:
Create and produce a FULL instrumental cover or original song from scratch.
Points will be given based on:

    • The proficiency in mixing multi-track mixes.

    • Quality of the instruments recorded.

    • Workflow organization.

    • Unique compositional choices such as key and tempo changes, as well as extending or adding an original guitar solo, vocal melody lines, rap, scream, etc.

Unique instrumentation and demonstration of musicianship, audio engineering, producing, and of course, collaboration is needed to get credit for this challenge.

  2. Philosopher’s Noise:
Capture and create an IR (Impulse Response) of any environment of your choosing and integrate it to your project via convolution reverb. To get credit, you MUST capture at least two IR’s. More is encouraged, but two is sufficient to complete this part of the extra-curricular. Provide the .wav capture IR files and screenshot of your session with the convolution reverb plugin. Additionally, provide a brief 2-3 sentence description on how these reverbs were blended and used throughout the entire mix.

  3. Sleight of Hand:
With the amount of average music listeners consuming their music through non-hifi sources such as small speakers, less than stellar car stereo speakers, and especially smartphone speakers, sometimes a song’s impact with their various instruments can be lost. While it’s the audio engineer’s job to make sure the final product sounds as great as possible on all forms of listening sources, sometimes that is not the case.
In turn, create an alternate/secondary mix that is tailored specifically for these non-hifi sources. As much as possible, this alternate mix attempts to:

  • Retain most of the important details in the mix, such as the overall balance of the instrumental.

  • Maintain a cohesive mix in MONO sources such as phones and other non-hifi sources.

Intelligence

  1. Shantay:  Have a hand drawn frame by frame animation(digital or traditional but not puppet) of a character lip syncing to the lyrics. At least one character, and at least 2 seconds of it. Even if animators crop it it’d count as long as the file had that length

  2. Threads of Fate: Include previous round(s) assets your team has made with a little twist…

  3. Tunnel Vision: Only draw half bodies for your characters (bust up minimum) but provide 2 versions for each character. If the pose is too similar it won’t count.

Magic

  1. Actions Over Words: Seldom will there be the chance to utter threats and taunts in the throws of battle- instead, one must dedicate all they have to their actions. Create eye-catching and cohesive scenes without the use of any typography whatsoever. (Using text for in-video credits, decoration, and small subtitles are allowed) (SAMPLE HERE) (1:03-1:13)

  2. A Narrow View: Rarely will you have the full picture- instead, you must rely on a fraction of what is possible, a sliver through the viewfinder. Have the aspect ratio of your entry be vertical rather than horizontal (ie 9:16 instead of 16:9) (SAMPLE HERE)

  3. Self Reliant: Your allies may not always be within arm’s reach - be prepared to tackle daunting challenges with your wit and skill alone. Use no more than 3 external assets, which means mainly creating your own through shapes, effects, 3D modeling, etc. (SAMPLE HERE).
